A Day in the Life: Rachel Samuels, Senior Director, Social Media at Sprout Social, Inc.

Rachel She worked with Sprout Social as part of the social team for six and a half years and held her current position as Senior Manager for two years. Having worked in the social field for 11 years and being a fan of the jump, the decision to join the Sprout Social team was a very natural step.

From engagement to publishing and analytics, to engagement with advocacy, Rachel has many responsibilities in her current role, as she has continued to use the Sprout Social tool to manage social networks and teams.

Originally from California, but lived in Chicago for five years before settling in Portland, ME in March, Rachel is a certified Nomad.

Rachel spoke with Talking Influence to tell us what her typical day looks like.

8:00 Every morning I wake up according to my internal alarm clock – usually between eight and nine in the morning. Since I spend so much of my day online, the first 90 minutes of my day are phone-free, although if I’m being honest some days I check emails and my Sprout inbox on my phone during breakfast and before I I’m officially logging in, to help me prepare mentally. My partner and I are fortunate as we live within walking distance of many beaches, and we often start our day by hiking to one of them.

10:00 Sprout empowers everyone to work in a way that fits our individual lifestyles. But I like to be online when the majority of my colleagues start their day and the crowds start. Being an hour ahead is a blessing in this regard.

I spend a lot of my day inside Sprout. I rely heavily on my daily smart inbox tool to manage our incoming social messages, interact with customers for their care or service needs and customize interactions with our audience. I use our premium listening and analytics tool every day to make sure we understand what’s hot and what’s not across social media.

12:00 My team is everything to me. The best part of any day or week is getting together and coming up with creative solutions and tackling a client’s problem or challenge. This is an exciting and challenging component of my job. We help people who are going through the same thing as me and my team.

13:00 Lunch is usually a frozen burrito. My team can attest that I often bring my lunch to my next meeting, they all definitely saw me with a frozen burrito!

14:00 At Sprout, there is a huge focus on standards and values that are truly respected and that play a role in how we operate. These values really set the tone for how we approach our work, whether it’s solving difficult problems and prioritizing those first or celebrating change and being able to be agile through constant change – which social media should definitely do!

15:00 To try to avoid the afternoon slump, I jumped into my to-do list to see what I had left. I usually prioritize three or four things a day if I’m not making progress, I will feel like I haven’t made progress in my day, so now is the time to get to it! Although I am trying to be kind to myself and find something more creative for this time.

16:00 Although a lot of people think they’re fads, I have a desk on the treadmill that I use religiously, especially on Wednesdays that focus on the whole company and meetings aren’t allowed. We are encouraged to find this state of focus and work on certain tasks. Our main goal was to expand our reach and expand our content to new audiences. I will use our advocacy tool to organize content for our employee base to share that has helped reach this goal.

17:00 In addition to focus days, we also have a daily focus hour where everyone understands that the last hour is reserved for finishing tasks instead of starting new ones. Work-life balance is fully integrated into our culture and collectively this watch helps us finish on time and spend an evening of rest and relaxation.

18:00 After work I love going out to nature. I turn my work phone off, and if I’m on my phone, it’s only for personal TikTok purposes at this point!

20:00 I like to sleep early, I can’t sleep late, the same way I have an internal alarm that wakes me, I have an off switch which means if it’s past 20:30/21:00 my glasses are out and I’m done for the day!

Having found the perfect work-life balance working remotely, it’s clear that Rachel’s passion for social media has only blossomed along with the help and support of her trusted Sprout Social tool.
