5 tips for starting a freelance writing business and paying off debt

On December 31, 2020, I paid my last $60,000 student loan back nine years ahead of schedule. It wasn’t easy and it took a lot of sacrifice to make it happen, including Moving to South Korea to teach English.

But my Korean teaching job paid me less than $30,000 a year. And while it was enough to live on, it wasn’t enough to help me pay off my debts.

To complement my entry, I started freelance writing in 2014. Since then, I’ve learned a lot and earned literally thousands of dollars that I wouldn’t have otherwise. Thanks to self-employment, I am debt free and have traveled the world.

I have five tips for anyone considering starting a freelance writing side business to get rid of debt.

1. Don’t worry about industry outlets; Focus on types of content

When you start delving into the world of freelance writing, you’ll hear a lot about “personalization” – or choosing certain areas to write about.
