Teachers, educators, and students want to keep the vast majority of their tuition online because they see it as effective or more effective than the traditional in-person approach.
That’s according to Bramble’s third annual online tutoring survey, conducted in the summer of 2022.
A total of 2,262 people took part in the survey – 43% of the respondents were teachers, 29% were teachers and 21% were students.
The survey reveals that online tuition has become firmly entrenched since the pandemic has seen most teachers switch from in-person to online.
In the Bramble survey, more than half (51%) of all teachers said their lessons had been exclusively online in the past 12 months, with only 3% saying they now study exclusively in-person.
Most teachers (84%) found online tutoring to be effective or more effective than in-person tutoring – an increase from less than 80% in the 2021 survey.
A minority of teachers (14%) want a return to purely personal education. Nationwide, nearly half (48%) said they prefer a mix of in-person and online tutoring, with 39% wanting to stay online exclusively — a 7% increase from the 2021 survey.
The ability to teach from anywhere has been the main benefit of online education for teachers, with more flexible lesson scheduling, access to more students and lesson recordings, among other major benefits.
The desire for an online/in-person mix is greater among teachers in the East Midlands: 64 percent of teachers in that area prefer this mixed approach. In London, it was evenly split between internet only (45%) and mixed (45%).
More than half (54%) of teachers in Yorkshire and the Humber did not want any return to personal tuition fees. A similar percentage of teachers in the Northeast took the same view.
And the number of students who find online tutoring effective or more effective than in-person tutoring also continues to grow – from just under 80% in the 2021 survey to 86% in 2022. A third of teachers (33%) said they have used their school’s external tutoring support, with the vast majority (88%) of those tutoring being delivered online.
When teachers were asked to compare online tutoring with tutoring, 80% of teachers said they were effective or more effective because students are more relaxed and focused, each lesson is recorded and searchable, and progress is easier to track.
81% of teachers said that support for external teaching had a positive effect on their students: 53% said it led to an improvement in achievement, and 57% said it improved students’ confidence. Nearly a third (29%) said that subsidizing education has reduced the achievement gap for disadvantaged students.
The proportion of teachers using external tuition varies by region – 43% of teachers in the West Midlands said they used external tuition support compared to 27% in London. Teachers in the Northwest (58%) were more likely to say that these external tuition fees improved achievement.
