WordPress Plugin Makes Your Blog Mobile Device Friendly

by Deborah on April 9, 2010

Have you ever looked at your WordPress blog on a mobile device? You should.

What you’ll notice is that things aren’t in the same place as on your web page. Some things don’t display at all on the mobile device. It takes a long time to load. And most important, you’ll notice it’s not a good user experience. Would you want to come back to that blog on a mobile device?

Help is here in the form of the  WPtouch iPhone Theme WordPress plugin by Brave New Code. This WordPress plugin converts your WordPress website into a mobile site compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, Android-based smartphones, Palm Pre, and Blackberry Storm devices. It is actually a mobile theme for your WordPress site modeled after Apple’s app store design specs. WPtouch loads quickly and formats your content in a way that makes your reader come back for more. And, it doesn’t interfere with your site theme.

Many WordPress sites incorporate javascript files, image-heavy sidebars and while this is great on a laptop, does increase page load  times for impatient site visitors.

WPtouch comes with these standard WordPress website features:

  • search
  • login
  • categories
  • tags
  • archives
  • photos
  • thumbnails

The image to the right is a pretty accurate representation of what your site will look like on a mobile device. My site displays like the phone to the right.

WordPress websites can be optimized for mobile devices with the help of several plug-ins. But as any automatic service, plug-ins often fail to retain site’s original design. It’s not difficult to distinguish a hand-made product from the one made with the help of plug-ins. You can see some examples of how your website can be optimized here http://www.MobilizeToday.com/examples. Or we can offer you an alternative way, our FREE mobile compatible WordPress theme Möbius

Hi,
I downloaded Mobius and then installed it through my WordPress dashboard. But it says the upload failed. :-(

Any tips? I didn’t find any installation instructions on your website.

Thanks!
