Conquer Contact Form 7
Do You Need To Create A Custom Form Using The Contact Form 7 Plugin?
No, not a “one size fits all” form. No, not the easiest form to work with. But THE absolute best form for your needs.
You’re not dumb and you’re able to figure most things out. But sometimes these WordPress plugins are hard to figure out.
What if there was a step-by-step guide that a reasonably intelligent technology person could follow?
First, you do Step 1. If you follow the directions exactly, the plugin will be installed on your site. Here’s what you do if you get stuck.
The next step is to configure the plugin. This is how…

What if you could follow that guide until your form was working just like you need it?
I would have really liked to have something like this for any plugin when I first started building WordPress sites. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing and no one to teach me. I remember the first time a plugin broke my site. Talk about panic.
So about six months ago, I got the idea to start putting what I’d learned about plugins into ebooks that would help other solopreneurs build their websites quickly and efficiently. What does this plugin do? How will it look on the website? Can I manage it? How much work is it to set it up? Is it a plugin that will meet my needs or just a short-term fix to a long-term problem?
These are questions I’ve answered in my ebooks because this is what you need to know before you make your decision.
You don’t have to be a code geek to do this…
(This page may be longer than you’re used to, but that’s because I want you to have all the information you need and to understand exactly what these ebooks are all about. And besides, I just like explaining things. *SMILE*)
I am fascinated by plugins. It is amazing to me how that little piece of code, installed and configured correctly, can completely transform a website into one that has my personal mark on it. I can, and have, spent hours or even days working with a plugin to get it working for me. And I felt a sense of satisfaction when I finished.
But that’s not YOUR fascination. You can think of many other things to do with your time. And as a matter of fact, you don’t call it fascination, you call it frustration. You just want it to work!
That saying, “time is money” is so true. In my day job, I make $75 an hour. Let’s say, I choose an easy plugin to install. I still have to search for it in the WordPress Repository. I have to look at the screenshots, the FAQ, the changelog, the installation instructions. Usually I bebop over to the plugin author’s page and read the forum, just to get a feel for the kind of problems I might encounter. Often what I’m looking for, but have the hardest time finding, is just a site that is using the plugin, or a screenshot of how the plugin looks on a webpage.
Then, after I do the research, I install the plugin. I go to my Dashboard and look at all the options the plugin has. I click a few, preview my changes, and have a look. No, not what I want. Back to the Dashboard, do it over. Still not what I want. Well, off to the plugin forums I go. You get the idea? Before I know it, I am two, or three, or four hours into this plugin installation, and the end isn’t in sight.
So, what does that mean to you? What if after all this time, the plugin works? Great! But, what if it doesn’t? And I have to begin that process all over again? That four hours has now cost me $225 in time, and it doesn’t work. This could get very costly.
So many plugins, how to choose?
If you’ve been hanging out with me on my blog, you know that I think most people over complicate plugins. Plugin developers are great guys, and what would we do without them? But most of them, because they are so good at what they do, have a hard time simplifying their plugins enough for the rest of us to understand. Now, these plugins can be useful to you, very useful. I know, because I use plugins on my blog, about 30 of them.
I have social media plugins, backup plugins, SEO plugins, calendar plugins, email subscription plugins, contact form plugins, iPhone plugins, Blackberry plugins, estore plugins, YouTube plugins, tag cloud plugins. You get the idea.
But you – the busy solopreneur – don’t need to know the details of what makes a plugin work. You just need it to work. Or you may be fairly proficient at WordPress, but plugin installation isn’t your fascination, it is your frustration.
It’s not about complicated code or techniques. It’s about finding the plugin that best suits your personal needs, and then using it successfully to accomplish what it was designed for. Technology is a tool, make it work for you!
No prior experience required. (Just the ability to follow directions.)
The main problem you’re probably facing right now is deciding which plugin will do what you need. There are so many custom form plugins out there that do the same thing. But which ones do what you are looking for, and how can you get the right one working on your website? And, you want to know: how do I do this quickly so I can move on with my life?
What I’ve got for you…

Here’s the nifty part…
Your interaction with me will help shape future ebooks.
I know what’s worked for me, for my friends, and for my business partners. But that might not cover exactly what you need.
If you need more help setting up the spam features, I’ll add more material on that. If it’s questions about email setup, I’ll dive into that. And if there’s some new “must have” social media plugin that pops up, well, that’s another plugin ebook in the making. Just for you.
Essentially, you early ebook readers become a kind of group coaching program that provide feedback for future releases. You get your needs met, your concerns addressed, your “sore points” tended to. And you get the best price that will ever be offered.
What’s in the “Conquer Contact Form 7 eBook”?
After talking with many of you, getting your feedback and suggestions, and giving it months of thought, here’s how I’ve organized things.
(This is a work in progress. As the plugin is updated, this book will be also. As I continue to act on your feedback and suggestions, more information will be added.)
1. Spam Control
Obviously, spam is a big problem anytime we invite site visitors to interact with us. In this case, CF7 gives you several options to combat that annoying spam. I learned a lot about spam prevention just by delving into the plugin while writing this book.
Communicate with the people you want to communicate with.
This is one of the meatiest sections in the book, because there’s a lot to cover. Once you’ve completed the section on spam control, you’ll have a solid foundation in using Contact Form 7 to create custom forms…forms for job applications, retreat/event signups, pre-sales questions, or just a plain contact form.
Whenever your customers drop by, you’ll be ready with a compelling form that pulls them toward you. You’ll learn how to
- Create CAPTCHAs for your new form
- Install the “Really Simple CAPTCHA” WordPress plugin
- Customize the colors in your CAPTCHA
- Change the size of the CAPTCHA input field.
- Humanize the CAPTCHA with personal instructions
And, you’ll see exactly how it displays on the page.
But wait, you don’t like CAPTCHAs? Try using a quiz instead. The ebook will instruct you on how to
- Identify the pipe character on your keyboard and insert it into your tag
- Create a quiz question and insert it into the tag
And there’s one more option. Connecting your form with the WordPress Akismet plugin may be the best choice for you. Here’s how to
- Install and configure the Akismet plugin on your site.
- Customize the colors in your CAPTCHA
- Add code to the form to interface with the Akismet plugin
And, there’s even a screenshot included so you can see what the would-be spammer sees.
2. Checkboxes, Radio Buttons, & Menus
This is the section that gets deep into the how-to, the fun stuff you want to add to your form. You’ll build the tags that will make the default form uniquely yours and take strangers smoothly down the path to becoming great ongoing customers.
The work you’ll do in this section has one purpose: to build amazing relationships with customers and potential customers.
Some of the things I’ll cover in this section are
- How to setup forms with checkboxes to capture unique information from site visitors
- How radio buttons can be used to create functional forms
- Dropdown menus as a way to acquire different types of information
3. File Uploading & Attachments
The ability to receive files from your site visitors can help grow your business. This is where you’ll start creating serious systems to connect with new people, attract attention, and bring more new customers in the door.
Notice that most contact form plugins don’t include this.
Formatting the emails to send attachments is tricky. These screenshots and instructions walk you through it. And remember, you can always shoot me an email if you hit a bump in the road.
This section gives you some simple, smart strategies to start bringing new customers in the door, including
- How to create a simple file upload form
- How to change the file upload size
- How to accept additional file types
- How to format the form to receive multiple attachments
- How to format the emails so the files are sent straight to you
4. Acceptance Checkbox
There are times when you will want your site visitor to agree to your Terms of Service or something else. And, the acceptance checkbox can be used as another wall the spammer has to jump.
- How to set up a simple “check required” acceptance box
- How to set up an acceptance box that is already checked, the site visitor needs only to click “Send”
- How to set up an acceptance box that is not checked, the site visitor needs only to click “Send”
In order to submit, the site visitor must read the instructions. Since some spam is machine generated that spam will be stopped. And let’s face it, spammers are lazy or they’d have a real job, so they won’t do much reading either.
5. Setting Up Mail
Now you’ve got the form set the way you want it. This section explains how the email function works. Included in this section
- What’s in the default email to you
- How to set up the second email to go to your site visitor
- How to customize the email with the checkbox, dropdown, radio button, or file information you need
- How to include CC: and Bcc: copies
6. Messages
This module has some nifty tweaks and extras that make for very nice “add-ons.” Covered in this module:
- A frontend view of the default messages your site visitor sees for a successful submission, validation errors, spam, and a failed submission
- A frontend screenshot showing a successful message on a webpage
- How to move the position of the message on the webpage
- Frontend screenshots showing how validation errors appear to your site visitor
- Backend list and explanation of all messages sent to site visitors, change them here

Test drive the ebook and see if it takes you where you want to go.
I think you’re going to find that the information is solid, the screenshots are exactly what you need, the written instructions are a huge source of support (and you can always email me for nuts-and-bolts advice on your individual project), and that the experience isn’t just worth the modest cost, but it’s also worth your time and attention.
If you don’t agree, let me know. I’ll be very happy to refund the full price of the ebook, and we’ll part as friends.
